1970s

WBOM continues its journey through the "20th Century Playlist" with music from the seventies.

The music of the 1970s was diverse and highly influential, marked by the expansion of rock into multiple subgenres and the rise of entirely new styles that defined popular culture. Rock music dominated much of the decade, with bands like Led Zeppelin and Queen pushing the boundaries of hard rock and theatrical performance, while groups such as The Eagles helped shape the smooth “album rock” and soft rock sound that became widely popular on radio. Funk and soul also flourished, led by artists like Stevie Wonder, who blended rhythmic innovation with deeply expressive songwriting. At the same time, disco emerged as a dominant dance genre in the mid-to-late 1970s, with its steady beats and orchestral production taking over clubs and influencing mainstream pop. By the end of the decade, punk rock began reacting against polished commercial sounds, introducing a raw, fast, and rebellious energy that set the stage for the 1980s alternative scenes. Overall, the 1970s were a time of genre expansion and experimentation, where rock splintered into many forms and dance-oriented music gained major cultural power.
